What to Wear

SHOES

  • Walking shoes are different from running shoes, and you need to find the kind that work for you

  • Get your shoes from a store with expertise in fitness, not from a department store

  • You should train alternating between 2 different pairs of shoes

  • Bring both pairs to the walk

SOCKS

  • Socks should be comfortable and form-fitting – blisters form when sock material slips and creases

  • Choose a material other than 100% cotton so that they do not retain moisture

  • Change your socks in the middle of each walking day

CLOTHES

  • Use your training miles to figure out exactly what you will wear during the walk – think about things from your sports bra and underwear to your socks and sneakers, and your belly bag – so that you know what will work and what won’t

  • Since you will be training during warmer/hot weather, choose clothing that will allow sweat to evaporate and keep your skin dry – synthetic fabrics dry quickly, while cotton absorbs sweat

  • Wear layers that can be removed as you warm up and replaced while resting or as the day turns cooler.

  • In the rain (yes, you should train in the rain), wear a waterproof outer layer with secure closures around your neck and wrists to keep you dry
